ABSTRACT
Regular Exercise is consistently related to physical and psychological health benefits inolderadults. The purpose of this study was to investigate source of information about exercise behavior in 40-64 years old Turkish people.
Methods: One hundred twenty subjects (nwoman=71, n=men=49) volunteered to take part in this study. Subjects had done exercise regularly at least 1 year. Besides, socioeconomic status, educational level and exercise habits of subjects were compared. The subjects were conducted a questionnaire which included 55 questions about exercise habituation.
Results: (1) BMI of subjects was 27,98±4,41 (pre-obese). (2) %67 of subjects had exercised 4-5 days per week. (3) %91 of subjects did exercise less than 90 minutes for each day. (4) %76,3 of subjects emphasized that information about exercise was acquired except for physicians and exercise instructors.
(5) %27 of subjects indicated that information about exercise was acquired from TV and %44,5 from other information sources like family, relatives, friends, municipal activities, billboards or internet.
There were no clear differences (X2=6,98, p>0,05) between educational level and number of exercise per week of subjects who have already had done exercise regularly. Turkey is a developing country and percentage of people who can read and write is %87,25. Accordingly, this feature influences exercise quality of people.
Conclusion: Results from this study suggested that, information is insufficient for some Turkish people to promote and encourage them to do exercise. The quality of television broadcasts related with exercise should be increased to promote and encourage of people for doing exercise. The source of information about exercise should be varied for instance, newspapers, friends, family, relatives, municipal activities, billboards or internet.
Key words: promotion, exercise, information, older, education.
